Guacamole is so delicious and it pairs great with a variety of dishes like tacos, chips, sandwiches, nachos, you get my drift. This Authentic Guacamole Dip is a bowl full of awesomeness.

But with so many guacamole dishes out there often it’s difficult to find one that’s simple, easy, and authentic. Growing up in a border town, guacamole was a staple in every kitchen and restaurant. It’s like the backbone of Mexican cuisine alongside chilis.

Guacamole actually goes back to the time of the Aztecs from the word ahuaca-mulli which when translated means avocado sauce.  Authentic Guacamole Dip 1

The Aztecs regarded guacamole as an aphrodisiac and a super food since avocados have a high fat content and their diet was high protein and low fat.

Although avocados have a high-fat content, 77% to be exact, it is comprised of monounsaturated fats (the healthy kind). It’s also packed with vitamins and contain more potassium than bananas.

One of the most important prerequisites to make an authentic guacamole recipe is that you use Hass avocados since not all avocados are created equal. Some guacamole recipes add tomatoes, but it’s a thing of preference. I prefer my guacamole without tomatoes and many will argue that this is the most authentic version. If you like your guac with tomatoes, go ahead and add some. Drizzle some additional lime juice into the mixture to prevent the guacamole from turning brown.

Authentic Guacamole Dip

An authentic guac recipe straight from Mexico!

Servings 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe Hass avocados
  • 1 lime juice
  • 1 jalapeño pepper
  • 1/2 small red onion
  • cilantro leaves optional
  • sea salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mash the Hass avocados with a fork.
  2. Dice the red
  3. onion and slice the jalapeño.
  4. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and serve with baked tortilla chips.
